2003 POLARIS Scrambler 500 4x4, The Scrambler 500 4x4 is sporty and boasts that its 500-class 4-stroke engine is complemented by the Polaris intelligent On-Demand true 4-wheel drive system. The Polaris 4WD system senses when the rear wheels lose traction, then automatically engages both front wheels with full torque. A driver activates the 4-wheel drive with an on/off switch located by the right handgrip. For 2003, the Scrambler 500 4x4 offers a better ride, since its rear suspension travel has been increased to about 10.5 inches-an increase of nearly 2 full inches from the previous years model. The rear suspension has a Fox Shox with a remote reservoir. The MacPherson strut front suspension has about 8 inches of travel, and the turning radius is just 60 inches. Because of the Polaris Concentric Drive System (CDS), the full range of the rear suspension travel can be utilized without any loss of power being delivered to the rear wheels. CDS aligns the swing arms pivot point with the center of the drive sprocket. The rear suspension performance is not affected by engine torque, and a consistent chain tension is maintained, reducing chain wear and decreasing considerably the need for chain adjustment or maintenance. The Scrambler 500 4x4 draws its considerable power from a Polaris 500 engine, a 4-stroke, liquid- cooled engine. The power is managed by the automatic PVT (Polaris Variable Transmission), a dual-sensing transmission that responds to both engine RPM and vehicle torque load. E-Z Shift lets a rider choose between forward and reverse. Single-lever, all-wheel hydraulic disc brakes and a hydraulic rear foot brake provide the stopping power, and two handlebar-mounted, dual-beam (high/low) quartz halogen headlights provide outstanding illumination.
